This is a 2003 R400 race car that was never raced! The previous owner had intended to race in the Caterham series but lost his sponsor. Instead he SVA'd the car in April 2004 and road registered it in September of that year. When I bought the car he said that it had done about 1500 miles (The add can still be found in the archives), so that is what was declared on the logbook when I applied for change of owner. I have no way of verifying that mileage, but it would tally with the vehicle condition at the time.
Since I have owned the car (from 19/08/06) I have had the road version of the Stack dash unit fitted, so it now has an odometer and fuel gauge (I had to fit a new fuel tank, pump & sender unit at the same time). The car is currently showing 767 miles but as I said I cannot verify the previous mileage.
Since owning the car the following work has been done on it:
Engine Top End Rebuild (November 06).
The car had the dreaded head gasket failure shortly after I got it. Possibly this was due to the car being left standing for so long. The cylinder head was pitted so was sent to Minster who welded and skimmed it prior to rebuild. All work was carried out by Fauldsport (Caterham approved Motorsport Team) This included the head work at Minister, new bolt sets, new gaskets, cam belt, plugs fluids and everything else needed to re assemble the car. At the same time I had the heater removed and a blanking plate put in its place. I still have the heater (it's as new having never been used or even plumbed in) and it will be included in the sale. The oil cooler was removed at the same time (not needed unless your racing). Other items done at this time included balancing the throttle bodies and calibrating the new Stack unit.
Superlight Cage (December 06) The windscreen, wipers and hood were removed and a Superlight Cage was fitted, this included the fitting & painting of a new scuttle.
Lowered Driver Side Floor (March 07) Included a new fixed seat runner to the passenger side.
Invoices from Fauldsport total PS1985.55.
In addition to this the new road version of the Stack unit cost PS381.31 and I have an invoice from Caterham Cars for PS1708.85 for the parts needed to replace the race (foam filled) fuel tank for the road version that would provide an fuel gauge function. The bulk of this cost however, was for the new carbon fibre airbox kit that I needed to reduce the induction noise (PS998.75 on its own).
I bought this car for track days and that's where it really shines. All the money lavished on it has been to with that goal in mind. The car can be driven on the road but it is a little lumpy at low revs. The suspension & steering are both race derived and as such not ideally suited to long distance road or motorway driving. The geo is set up to under steer first so if you like the slow in fast out approach its' ideal. The rear ride height is a bit low as a result and it can struggle with speed bumps. All this is easily fixable for about PS200. The tyres are nearing the end of there life if the cars for road use, the increased camber angles of the race set-up have worn the inside edge. They are also the original tyres that came with the car so are getting a bit hard with age. The normal Caterham stone chips apply and the off side front cycle wing has some scratches where it came adrift at Donington a few months back, nothing too bad though and its been re attached with sikaflex.
I will be genuinely be gutted to see this go. Only being sold due to a marital break-up, and I am looking for a (cheaper) replacement. Looking for PS18,495 ONO for a quick sale, willing to spend approximately PS11K on its replacement.
I've tried to be honest and fare with the description so no time wasters please. This is a race car, albeit un raced, that's been made road legal. It is brutal, uncomfortable and staggeringly fast, not one of the highly polished almost luxurious examples you will find elsewhere... (YCRTA I don't really want to sell it but have to, so I'm open to REASONABLE offers and part exchange).
